The more able mathematicians from Years 9, 10 and 11 of The Taunton Academy competed in the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) Intermediate Mathematical Challenge online on 3rd February 2021.
The Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC) is a 60 minute, multiple choice competition aimed at students across the UK to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the IMC are designed to make students think and promotes a love of problem solving.
TTA are pleased to announce some of their best results in the competition. Their pupils won a total of nine medals, including one gold, one silver and seven bronze.
A big round of applause to our gold medallist Alex with 106 points. He also won a ‘distinction’ in the Cayley Olympiad which is a follow on round to the IMC. It is a two hour competition consisting of six problems requiring full written solutions and only 600 brightest students from all over the country were invited in the Cayley Olympiad. Alexis, we are so proud of you and wish you all the best in the follow up Pink Kangaroo Competition.
Well done to Maciej with 72 points to win a silver medal. Special mention to Jack, Charlie, Mary, Lydia, Ella and Haydon who all won a bronze medal.
A special well done to George from Year 8 who got 61 marks and won a bronze medal. George, it is an incredible achievement and we wish you all the best in the JMC.
TTA are very grateful to the UKMT for organising this competition online. A big thanks to parents and all teachers for their support.
TTA will carry on providing opportunities to our more able students to compete in national competitions to enrich their mathematical education and inspire a love of problem solving and these results are an excellent proof of the outstanding achievements of our students in Mathematics.
We look forward to celebrating more great results for our Year 7 and 8 students, who will take part in the Junior Mathematical Challenge in April.
