Two Richard Huish College Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) students have gained places on prestigious UNIQ residential courses at the University of Oxford. Amber Lintern has gained a place on the UNIQ French course whilst another student has gained a place on the German course.

UNIQ is the University of Oxford’s access programme for state school students that aims to help students from a greater diversity of backgrounds make successful applications to the University of Oxford. Started in 2010, the UNIQ residential summer schools have been hosted virtually for the past two years, but this year include both an academic residential in Oxford alongside a sustained online admissions support programme.

To be selected, students must be in Year 12 and demonstrate a record of academic success. The Huish students have each been successful in obtaining one of the limited 1,350 residential spaces available to those who apply from across the UK.

Sara Goddard, Course Manager of French and German at Huish shared “I am sure this will be a fantastic experience, I’m so proud of both of them”.

The 4-day residentials each take place in July. They will allow students to explore the language, literature, theatre, film and linguistics of their selected country, alongside an opportunity to have a taster in two other European languages at beginners’ level (from a selection of German, French, Italian, Portuguese or Russian). The aim is to give students a taste of what it is really like to study Modern Languages at Oxford and provide a sense of the breadth of the courses.

There are many benefits to studying MFL, in addition to being highly desired degrees by employers who are operating in a global marketplace, and presenting travel opportunities, studying a language will demonstrate skill strengths in communication, memory, problem-solving, analysis and creativity giving those with a qualification a competitive edge. Mastering a second language can also improve understanding of arts, diverse cultures, history, and the English language.

As well as offering students a fantastic experience, UNIQ students who apply to Oxford have a higher rate of success than other students. Huish students are further supported in their applications to Oxbridge universities by the Huish Academic EnRICH programme. The programme, open to all students, provides targeted guidance for those applying to Oxford, Cambridge and Russell Group Universities, or for Medical and Veterinary degrees. It includes specialist advice on making a competitive application and input from Huish alumni to support interview preparation. Huish is extremely proud to have students progress to Oxford and Cambridge year on year, and currently seven students have received offers to study at Oxford and Cambridge in September 2022.
